Nine kilometers west of Satovcha lies the village of Dolen and the cultural and historical reserve of the same name which includes the territory of the village of Dolen itself with its 70 cultural monuments built in the days of the Bulgarian re-vival. Dolen is a typical alpine village located at an altitude of 1020 meters on the southwestern part of the Dubrava share of the western Rhodopes at only 26 km from the town of Gotse Delchev. Found by settlers fleeing from the forcible con-version to Islam during the sixteenth century, it is mentioned in Turkish records as early as 1671. The architectural boom of the Bulgarian revival is preserved to this day in the 70 houses which became cultural monuments in 1977 when the whole area acquired the official status of a “Cultural and historical reservation Dolen”. The main attractions are the old church "St. Nikola", built in 1834 as a complex including a school. On the iconostasis of this church one can see the icons of Georgi Filipov, a painter from Debarsko, who some time later moved and settled in Gabrovo. Another attraction are the typical revival-style street crossroads called "Kavalite", the "Nikolovskata cheshma" and the “Main street”. In the past the village was known for its well-developed goldsmith’s and drayman’s services. The 477 inhabitants of this unique settlement live in a most picturesque environment of cobblestone streets and typical century-old houses built in the style of the Bulgarian revival. They feature the classical bay-windows on the second and third floors and have an internal design typical of similar old houses all over the country. Some ceilings are decorated with wood carvings. Of particular interest is the church, built in 1834, which is an example of a piece of marvelous woodwork and carvings made by self-taught artists. Visitors are enveloped in the incredible silence, the warble of the nearby river, the gentle singing of the birds and the buzz of the bees. You will breath the fresh mountain air and will not stop wondering what kind of a place is this and how is it that time has stopped still here centuries ago. The mountain will captivate you with its greenery in spring and summer, the sparkling whiteness of the winter snow and the magnificent carpet of autumn colors. Here every season paints its unique picture. The village of Dolen impresses both with its history and with its still unsolved mysteries. It has a unique atmosphere and it is no wonder why people say that here all your wishes will come true.
